The way Dickens writes the story, Scrooge followed the Spirit of Christmas Past to an awareness of his own shortcomings. He felt undone and wondered if he was condemned.
You needn't listen to the voice of condemnation. When you are sorrowful because of sin, listen instead to God's Word of hope and turn toward Him.

2 Corinthians 7:10 - For God can use sorrow in our lives to help us turn away from sin and seek salvation. We will never regret that kind of sorrow. But sorrow without repentance is the kind that results in death.
