My friend Jeff Petersen captured this picture of Judge Miller during our first service on the 4th of July weekend. It's such a wonderful reflection of his reverence, joy and dignity, I had to share it with you.
We honored him - and all the vets in our services - this weekend.
The Judge (awarded a Purple Heart for his injuries received in combat) will be 90 this December. He's giving everything he's got to help homeless veterans in Michiana. What's become "Miller's Vets" was birthed the moment he saw the recent photo of a homeless man in a coffin-like box on one of South Bend's streets. The Tribune stated it was 18 degrees outside when the picture was taken. Judge Miller thought, "That could be a vet." Such an offense prompted action, and the Judge told me he didn't have time to mess around.
Now GCC is partnering with The Center for the Homeless, and Miller's Vets, on the 747 Project. Our plan is to renovate the building at 747 South Main Street in South Bend so we can serve selected homeless vets, renewing their spirits and helping them get a fresh start in life.
My deepest appreciation goes to Judge Miller for his lifetime of contributions to his country and community. He is worthy of honor.
Proverbs 29:23 - Pride ends in humiliation, while humility brings honor.
Thank you for introducing me to this wonderful man. Just another example of what it means when you tell us each week that our life matters.
