It occurs to me that a tsunami of information might overwhelm a person, burying them beneath the weight of so much data. I'm guessing that's one reason the Bible advises the pursuit of "wisdom." Most of us need to know what's important. We need discernment in addition to data.
To that end I'm blogging one great take-away-thought from each of the Summit Sessions. It was the best Summit we've offered. The distilled wisdom of great leaders follows...
1. Bill Hybels "The High Drama of Decision Making" Here’s one axiom I believe. Get the right people around the table and we’ll be fine. 2. Gary Haugen "Just Courage: Charging the Darkness" If you want your leadership to matter, lead in the things that matter to God. Lead the things that matter to God’s people. 3a. Bill George "Finding Your True North" My Definition of Leadership: 3b. Wendy Kopp "Stand Up and Lead" We thought we could attain incredible scale, but it would cost a lot of money. So, how could we get there? We had to gain stability or we could never have held great ambitions. 4a. John Burke "Leading in New Cultural Realities" Making and maintaining good soil is everything for making beauty grow. 4b. Efrem Smith "Leading in New Cultural Realities" Take responsibility. Jonah had to say, "The reason there is a storm in the world, is 'my bad.'" When high pressure collides with low pressure a storm erupts. When the high pressure of God's call bumps against the low pressure of what we'd rather do, a storm erupts. 5. Craig Groeschel "IT: How Leaders Can Get IT and Keep IT" Here's the bad news… 6. Chuck Colson "Defending the Faith" Here is my leadership lesson: 7. Catherine Rohr "Risk-Taking, Barrier-Breaking, Bold Leadership" I'm willing to die for this. It's a calculated cost and I'm willing to embrace it. I was willing to risk everything. I like to think that there is nothing I wouldn't give up for God. I used to pray, "Bring it on God. Bring it on." 8. Brad Anderson "An Uncompromising Focus on People" Moses was “called” to do his job. He had a long list of reasons he shouldn’t be doing it. But Moses did the job because he was “called” to do it. 9. Bill Hybels "Relentless" When it looks like the dream is going to die, God does some of His most purifying work. It's then that you ask yourself: "Is this assignment really from God, or did I just make it up myself?" Be careful. God might be preparing you, and refining you, by the frustration of this era. Psalm 49:1-3 - "Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world: both low and high, rich and poor, together. My mouth shall speak wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding."
1. Align (around vision)
2. Empower (People support what they help create.)
3. Serve (People are not there to serve you;
you are there to serve them.)
4. Collaborate. (In the organization and between organizations)
Say, "My bad," when you mess up. Take responsibility.
...if you have “it” it doesn’t mean you’re going to keep "it."
Here's the good news…..
...if you don’t have “it” it doesn’t mean you can’t get "it."
(a) Look at the environment and look at your resources.
(b) Serve your troops. Train and equip them.
(c) Give them the vision of a cause much greater than themselves.
(d) Give one simple instruction, “Follow me.”
Remember this: If you are shepherd, your job is not to pander to your people; you job is to lead them to the Truth.
"How long am I willing to wait on God?"
"Do I really believe God can change the heart of someone in authority over me?"
"Would I lay down my life to carry out the vision God is asking me to carry out?"
