This Great Horned Owl was perched high above the path Sheila and I walked yesterday. It's two feet tall and has a 55 inch wingspan. Wish I had my telephoto lens...but this was the best I could do.
These owls are the ones with the deep hooting,"hoo-h'HOO--hoo-hoo."They are remarkable predators, regularly killing and eating nestling Ospreys. The reintroduction of Peregrine Falcons has been hampered in some areas by owls killing both adult and nestling falcons. They hunt at night, usually from perches near open areas.
Great Horned Owls are easily recognizable because of their size, and because of the feather tufts on their heads. Their "plumicorns" resemble horns or, to some, catlike ears. Have you ever seen one of these? They are among the most widespread and common owls in North America.
Cool, eh?
Job 35:11 - Who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth, And makes us wiser than the birds of the heavens?
While I was in camp ministry, I was driving back from town and had a young one swoop down in front of my car. It was only a couple feet from my windshield. It scared me half to death but it was an amazing sight!
