After Aaron's DJ completed the most incredible run of dance songs ever sequenced for a Wedding Reception, the dancing got crazy.
We'd already been treated to the DJ's flair and panache when he performed all of Michael Jackson's best moves as "Beat It" pounded in the background. We'd seen the bride and groom boogie. We'd cheered the Country Western line-dance. The "Single Ladies" all danced to Beyonce's tune.
Then it got serious.
All the connubial couples took the floor, only to be eliminated from the dance competition (for which I had diligently trained) for the tenure of their marriages! I looked around and realized, "I might win this! Who's been married longer than Sheila and me?"
The DJ's questions narrowed the field as couples were disqualified when their marriages proved to short-lived to make the cut.
"Who hasn't been married for more than one day?" Aaron and Tracy laughed and walked off.
"Who hasn't been married more than 10 years?"
"...15 years?"
"...20 years?"
"...25 years?"
"...30 years?"
The DJ got to "Who hasn't been married for more than 35 years?" Sheila and I walked off the dance floor.
Finally, only one couple was left standing. We cheered. Granny and Papaw have been married 57 years! They were the winners of the Longest Marriage Award.
Astounded by their long and successful marriage, the DJ grabbed a microphone and asked them for advice. "With all those years of marriage behind you," the DJ inquired, "how would you tell other couples to make their marriages last a long time?"
Without a moment's pause for consideration on the matter, Papaw looked up and said, "Stay married."
Yup. You heard the strategy for a successful marriage from someone who's stayed with the same woman for 57 years. His advice is solid. It's simple.
If you want your marriage to last, just stay married.
Brilliant.

That's an instant classic. Love that story. I may have to use this in future lessons on marriage. No worries, all credit will be given to you.
