Some things make a man stop and think.
It's Father's Day and across the country men are pondering their significance and meaning. Some will be blessed by their children. Some will be ignored. Some are completely forgotten, but nearly all are wondering if they matter. They wonder if their wives think of them as anything more than sperm-donors. They wonder if their children think of them as anything other than well-heeled financiers. They wonder if their church-family values them for "who they are" as much as "what they can do."
What can a father do? In America's shifting culture, and downshifting family values, what's a father's role? Does a father have signficance, or does he make himself significant?
Most dads realize there are times when a child reaches for a woman's hand. They need "Mom's" support and assurance. But who is holding "Mom's" other hand? Who has a firm grasp on her? Isn't it her lover, husband and friend? Doesn't she hang on to the father of her children? Isn't his hand the one that holds hers?
Dads know the significance of a father's hand. They understand a father's hand is needed.
As kids sink deep roots in faith's rich soil, fathers don't withhold their support. They give it. What father would stay his hand when it's needed? Jesus once asked, "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?" Jesus was stating the obvious. His rhetorical question means: "No father does such things." Instead, fathers reach out with their hearts and hands, providing the help, strength and guidance their children so desperately need.
On this day I honor such men. They are great men, numbered among God's finest. They are worthy of our admiration.
Happy Father's Day brothers!
I'm proud of you.
You have my utmost respect.
2 Samuel 17:10b - The whole nation knows that your father is a mighty man and those who are with him are valiant men.
