John the Baptist said of Jesus, "He must increase. I must decrease."
Even his contemporaries, the religious leaders of his day, didn't understand who John was (clothed with camel’s hair and with a leather belt around his waist, eating locusts and wild honey). So John tried to clarify his own understanding of himself. He told them he came to prepare them for the coming of Jesus, "whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose."
Don't be confused.
Jesus is Lord.
He is first. I am second.
John 1:22-23
They said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”
He said: “I am ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way of the Lord.”’”
